Different countries and industries use different steel grade systems. The correct comparison should always consider the complete material standard, product form, thickness range, delivery condition, test requirements and project specification.

ASTM and ASME Steel Grades

ASTM and ASME grades are widely used for steel plates, pressure vessels, boilers, structural components, piping and industrial equipment. Common references include ASTM A36, ASTM A572, ASTM A516, ASTM A106 and API-related specifications.

EN and DIN Steel Grades

EN and DIN steel grades are frequently used in European engineering, construction, pressure equipment and machinery manufacturing. Typical grades include S235JR, S355JR, S355J2, P265GH and P355GH.

JIS Steel Grades

JIS steel grades are commonly specified for Japanese-standard industrial equipment, machinery, construction and fabrication projects. The exact grade should be confirmed according to the applicable JIS product standard.

GB/T Steel Grades

GB/T steel grades are Chinese national standard designations used for structural steel, pressure vessel steel, boiler steel, pipeline steel and other industrial products.

API Steel Grades

Chemical Composition

Grade information may include carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium, nickel, molybdenum and other controlled elements according to the applicable standard.

Mechanical Properties

Typical data includes yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, impact toughness, hardness and test temperature. Values may vary by thickness and delivery condition.

Equivalent Grades

Equivalent or comparable grades can help with preliminary material selection. Final substitution should be approved by the responsible engineer or project authority.

  2. Confirm the required standard. Identify whether the project uses ASTM, ASME, EN, DIN, JIS, GB/T, API or another specification.
  3. Check thickness and product form. Grade requirements can change according to plate thickness, pipe wall thickness, coil form or finished product dimensions.
  4. Review mechanical properties. Check yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, impact toughness and temperature requirements.
  5. Review chemical composition and weldability. Chemical limits can affect forming, welding, heat treatment and service performance.
  6. Confirm inspection and documentation. Specify MTC requirements, EN 10204 certification, ultrasonic testing, third-party inspection and other documents before ordering.
